Start Here

The whole method in five steps, and where to start from your exact situation.

The whole method in five steps, then an index to everything else.

Read this page. Then skip to your situation.

This is not a book. Nothing in here explains the job market to you. Every page is a script, a template, a worksheet, or a rule you can act on in the next twenty minutes.

Three things to know before you start.

1. You will not read this front to back. Use the index below. Find what is true about you right now, go to that page, do the thing.

2. Do the Proof Bank first. It is the only page everything else depends on. Twenty minutes, once. Every resume, message, and interview answer in this playbook pulls from it. Skip it and the rest of the playbook has nothing to work with.

If you just graduated, or you are changing careers and have no quota history, do "If You're Just Starting Out" instead. Same page, built from a life that has not included a sales job yet.

3. Fill in the brackets. Every template has [brackets]. Those are yours. A template sent with the brackets still in it is worse than no message at all.

The First 48 Hours

If you do nothing else this week, do these five things in this order. They take about three hours total.

  1. Build the Proof Bank. Part 1. Twenty minutes. Everything else needs it.
  2. Fix your headline and About section. Part 2. Twenty minutes. This is what makes recruiters able to find you at all.
  3. Build one master resume from the Proof Bank. Part 3. Ninety minutes, once. You will tailor it later, but you only build it once.
  4. Build the target list. Twenty companies, ten you want and ten to practice on. Part 4.
  5. Send one message to a human. Part 5. Not an application. A human.

If you do not know anyone yet, the Networking section is where to start instead of step 5.

That is the whole method in five steps. The rest of this playbook is depth on each one.

The five rules

Everything in here follows these. If you remember nothing else, remember these.

Rule 1. A person, not a portal. The application is the weakest move available to you. Referred candidates reach an interview about 40% of the time. Cold applicants, about 3%. Every role you actually want gets a human attached to it before or right after you apply.

Rule 2. Twenty sharp beats two hundred sloppy. The median person who got hired in 2026 sent sixteen applications. Volume is not a strategy, it is what people do instead of having one.

Rule 3. Never claim a number you cannot defend. Not one. If you put 128% of quota on a resume, you will be asked to explain the quota, the period, the segment, and the team average. Write down only what survives that question.

Rule 4. Show the result, not the responsibility. "Responsible for a territory" tells a hiring manager nothing. "Grew a $4M territory 22% in twelve months" tells them everything. Every line you write follows this.

Rule 5. One nudge, then move. Follow up once, cleanly, on a schedule. Then close it out and put your attention somewhere it can still win. Waiting is not a job search activity.

What this playbook will not do

It will not tell you to stay positive. It will not tell you the hidden job market is 80% of jobs, because that number is repeated everywhere and does not hold up. It will not give you a hack to beat the ATS with white text, because that gets you thrown out when a human opens the file.

It gives you the same method Eleva's recruiters use from the hiring side, written down, so you can run it yourself.

A note on the numbers in here

Where this playbook cites a figure, it is directional and drawn from recruiter and labor-market research from 2025 and 2026. Sources are listed in the back. Use them to decide where to spend your time. Do not quote them in an interview.

Next: [Part 1. The Proof Bank](/library/proof-bank).

Run this on your real search.

The playbook shows the move. Eleva makes it on your actual job and resume, and tells you the next one. Nothing sent in your name.
