Get Interviews
Fewer, sharper applications, and a human reached on every one.
Stop applying into the void. Three moves beat fifty applications.
The math, honestly
You need to see this once, then never think about it again.
- The pile got enormous. LinkedIn reported roughly 11,000 job applications per minute in mid-2025, up about 45% year over year. Everyone now has an AI writing their applications, which means everyone's application looks the same. Volume is the one strategy that is guaranteed to be commoditized.
- The referral advantage is enormous, and it is concentrated in exactly one place. Ashby analyzed 38 million applications across 93,000 jobs from 2021 to 2024. Referred candidates went from application to interview 40% of the time. Inbound applicants: 3%. That is the gate. Once you are interviewing, the gap narrows sharply, to about 16% versus 6% from interview to offer.
Read that carefully, because it tells you exactly where to spend your effort. A referral does not make you a better candidate. It makes you a candidate who gets read. After that you are on your own, which is what the rest of this playbook is for.
The other number in that dataset is the opportunity: referrals were only about 1% of all applications, and falling. Almost nobody does this. That is why it still works.
- Tailoring converts better than not tailoring. It is how you survive the keyword search a recruiter runs over the pile. The difference is alignment, not effort.
- Apply inside the first week, but not for the reason everyone says. The "apply within 24 hours or you're buried" rule is folklore. Nobody has measured it properly, and the real data cuts against the story: a posting's first week draws roughly 2.5 to 3 times more applications than any later week, so applying early puts you in the thickest part of the wave, not ahead of it. What is measured is the review window. Ashby found the median candidate who does not get an interview is archived within about 6 days, and 58% within 9. Apply in week one because that is when the requisition is actively being worked. Not because early gets special treatment.
- Some of what you are applying to is not real. Greenhouse's analysis puts ghost jobs at roughly 18 to 22% of postings. A 2025 survey of a thousand employers found about one in five deliberately leave roles unfilled while appearing to hire, and about one in five feel pressure to project growth through postings. The clearest tell is a listing that has been active more than about three months.
Notice what this says. The volume strategy is aimed at the worst-converting channel that exists, and it is now the channel most saturated with AI-generated sameness.
The move: fewer roles, scored before you spend time on them, each one with a human attached.
